Faith in the Basin. Churches invite communities in southern Murray Darling Basin to work with them in meeting the challenges of our times.

The Uniting Church in Australia (NSW.ACT Synod) and Catholic Earthcare Australia are asking young people aged 16 to 35 years living in the communities of the southern Murray Darling Basin to help nurture the things that make our communities vital and resilient in the face of change.

Faith in a Basin Future is a project encouraging the churches to move with the communities as they continue to grow sustainable futures in the face of challenges in the present social, cultural, environmental and economic realities of the Basin. The project is looking for champions in the communities of Berrigan, Coleambally, Deniliquin, Finley, Griffith Hay, Jerilderie, Leeton and Narrandera to bring people into the project.
“Faith in a Basin Future (FBF) is about championing and challenging younger people in our communities to put forward their examples and ideas about how to sustain what makes their community vital and worth living in.” said Project Steering Committee chairperson, Austin Evans from Coleambally Uniting Church.
“This project is about sustaining and giving voice to the spirit of our communities. A community is not just an economy; it’s the social and cultural connections between people and their environment.”
“We want to hear what younger people want their communities to be in the future and create a safe place for them to develop those ideas and be supported to implement them.”
“Older people can also be involved in the project as part of a mentoring panel and we invite interest from that group as well.”

“This project will provide the participants with training in researching public interest, making decisions by consensus and planning and managing projects with participants. A key part of the project will be a proposed Forum later in the year where participants can pitch their strategies to key social, corporate and philanthropic investors.” Mr Evans said.
